No. Meals are entirely your choice. Many hosts offer breakfast and dinner, which is the most common arrangement. Others provide no meals but allow students to cook for themselves. If you do not provide meals, make sure students have access to the kitchen. Providing meals generally allows you to charge a higher weekly rate.

Most homestay arrangements run from 3 months to 2 years, with a full academic year being the most common. Shorter-term stays of a few weeks do occur, particularly for secondary school program students, but the majority of students on Sydney Homestay are here for extended study.

No. Students can share a bathroom with the household. It is common and perfectly acceptable. A private or en-suite bathroom is a bonus that can make your listing more attractive and allow you to charge a premium, but it is not a requirement to host.

Yes, absolutely. You are always in control. When a student contacts you, you can review their profile, exchange messages, and decide whether it is a good fit before agreeing to anything. You can also specify preferences in your listing, such as whether you prefer male or female students, whether you have pets, or whether you have young children at home.

Sydney Homestay is a directory and connection platform. We do not process payments between hosts and students. Payment arrangements are agreed directly between you and your student. We recommend collecting a two-week bond before the student arrives and agreeing on a weekly or fortnightly payment schedule.

Issues are rare but usually come from unclear expectations around noise, kitchen use, guests, or study hours. Clear house rules before arrival prevent most problems. If the arrangement genuinely is not working, both parties should give reasonable notice. A two-week notice period is a sensible minimum courtesy.

Location matters to students mainly in terms of commute. They want reasonable access to their place of study by public transport or car. Areas within 30 to 45 minutes of major campuses and city centres are often very popular. Even outer suburbs with good train or bus connections are in demand. Include your nearest station or bus stop in your listing to help students assess suitability.
